Composting organic waste is as old as human kind. Banana peels, rotten pieces of our vegetables and old bread: we put it together, compost it and reuse it as a fertilizer on our soils. This is a pretty circular approach of no leakages. But is this all there is to it? Let’s look at ecosystem resilience, especially in times of climate change.

starting in indonesia

On the island of Flores, in Indonesia, arabica coffee is under threat of climate change. This will mean a full stop of all circles, and a possible end to many coffee livelihoods. In order to prevent this from happening, we’re changing to a more suitable coffee variety, the well known but less popular robusta.

The farmers of the ASNIKOM cooperative are now learning how to grow and process robusta coffee on a high level, taking out all defects and developing a round, refined taste profile. By doing this, they growing a high-end product whilst simultaneously arming themselves for an ecological and financial safe future.

Closing loops and investing in a climate proof future at the plantations is a good starting point. Circularity, however, is not just about the beginning or the end of the chain. It’s about connecting all actors in the chain, and closing local and global loops. In this value chain, we are also working towards:

  • support climate change adaptation

  • work towards no organic waste at plantation level and beyond

  • use of waste-based biofuels for (container) transport

  • use of coffee sludge through variety of cycles

  • home compostable packaging alternatives

  • roasted coffee price (incl. roasting loss): €18,75 per kg
